Mapping the Roads to Autonomous Success

A Mercedes-Benz piece published on January 14th discusses the need for high-precision maps in order to make self-driving cars a reality. Navigation systems will not be sufficient, because cars will need to understand their exact positions on the road.

“When turning, for example,” reads the article, “the car cannot approximate the point at which the steering wheel should be turned, an area in which human drivers are experts at making adjustments. Digital driving instructions need to be ultra-precise. In addition to the map data, the self-driving car’s various sensors will, of course, also provide it with important information about its environment.”
